REDBACKS 4.6.30

The Southern Redbacks hosted Aspley this week at Glenlogan Plark. With Aspley sitting in 3rd position on the Division 1 Ladder the local boys were to be on their game to be competitive with the Hornets.

The first quarter was an even contest with Aspley scoring 2 goals to the Redbacks 1, our goal coming from a
strong mark to Sam Usherwood 40 metres out from goal.The second quarter went in favour of the visiting team who used the windy conditions to their favour kicking 3 goals for the quarter.

Down by 4 goals at Halftime the boys came out with plenty of intensity and matched it with Aspley with both teams kicking 2 goals each, courtesy of Matthew Scarafilo and Simon Philippi. The last quarter we managed 1 goal kicked by Mitchel Brodtman and the opposition kicked a further 3 goals to run out winners by 42 points. Congratulations to Sam Usherwood for playing his 100th game for the Southern Redbacks.

A committed team effort resulted in the final score of Redbacks 6.3.39 to West Juniors 4.8.32.

Luke Gittens did a brilliant job at full back, stopping many sure goals.

Josh Armstrong was outstanding all day from half forward to fullback.

Tim Tate played his 100th game for the Redbacks in outstanding fashion, dominating play all over the ground, while Nathan Turtle put in an outstanding performance on the wing in his best game of the season. John Duncan was also a standout player with many possessions and clever football.

Congratulations to all for undoubtedly the best performance of the year.

Last week, The Southern Redbacks Struddy Sports Jimboomba under 12’s played Springwood at Henderson Rd. In average conditions, the Redbacks started the game well, and continued dominance throughout the game. With full credit to our halfback line, the ball never got within 30 metres of our goals. This effort and determination resulted in a significant win of 4.11.35 to 0.0.0.

Coming home the victors but taking nothing away from the Redbacks in which made the coaching staff very proud of the whole teams efforts on the day.

Aspley 2 12-6=78 Redbacks 7-12=54

Players of the match went to Sam Croft, Trent Krause, Reece Vandermeche,
Bradley Leedham but in a whole, all of the 18 players deserved an award.

The Carwise Under 16 Southern Redbacks played Mt Gravatt at their home ground on Sunday.
After a shock loss last week Mt Gravatt was expected to come out hard and full of run and if we were to stay with them on the scoreboard we must be accountable for our opoonent all day.

We came out strong kicking the first goal of the game thanks to strong leading up forward from Mitchel Brodtman who got his first goal for the game, that goal seemed to have flicked the switched for Mt Gravatt who then kicked the next 4 goals of the quarter.
The second quarter the Vultures continued to run hard out of the middle and marked well up forward and although we were competitive at times throughout the quarter we couldn’t keep up the intensity for the whole quarter, the backline had their hands full with strong leading and pin point passing from their
midfield to their forwards, James Gautrey had a good game swapping on the ball with Dylan Hughes at Centre Half Back his 2nd and 3rd efforts were excellent and continued to cover a lot of the ground when on the ball.

Our second goal of the game came in the second quarter when Andrew Davidson stood his ground under the high ball and marked well only to be hit late and receive a 50 metre penalty to take him within scoring range,good courage. Our third goal came in the third quarter when Mitchel Brodtman converted from another strong lead, the boys were getting a lot of the football but our errors and turnovers again was to cost us as Mt Gravatt piled on a further 6 goals in the 3rd term.

The last quarter was again to go in the favour of our opposition as they kicked 8 goals to our nothing to run out big winners and hand us our biggest defeat of the season. While a few players tried their best our opponents were much too quick and their use of the football and running players was more superior than ours.

Sandgate travelled to Jimboomba to take on the Carwise Southern Redbacks this week and with Sandgate sitting on top of the ladder in Division 1 it was to be a good test for the boys to see how they play against quality oppostion. Sandgate won the first quarter kicking 3 goals to our 3 points, the Redbacks had many scoring opportunities in the first quarter but failed to convert easy chances.The second and third quarters again were won by our opposition with Sandgate kicking 4 goals in each quarter to lead 10 goals at three quarter time. The fourth quarter both teams managed 2 goals each and although Sandgate won our boys showed a lot of fight and a never say die attitude all game.
